The division’s five pediatric nephrologists work with a dedicated team of specialist nephrology nurses, a dialysis technician, a dietician, a social worker, a psychologist, and administrative professionals to provide care to children with a wide range of kidney diseases. Conditions treated include urinary tract infections, congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, genetic renal diseases, and electrolyte disorders among others.
The division has active hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation programs, and also provides continuous renal replacement therapy, plasmapheresis, red blood cell exchange, and white blood cell depletion therapies. The team has expertise in a wide range of immunosuppressive and immunomodulating therapies, including new biologic agents.
The team provides both inpatient and outpatient care to children from across Quebec, cares for inpatients admitted under the Nephrology service and provides consultation services hospital-wide. Nephrology clinics are held four mornings per week. The division also maintains outreach clinics in Chicoutimi and in Gatineau, and provides care to Indigenous and other communities in remote Northern Quebec in collaboration with general pediatricians serving the communities and using Teleheath facilities.
